Sometime after making Ada’s crocodile brushing teeth page and looking into plastic mirrors online I realized I owned one on our baby gym. Next I just had to find a way to use it. I figured a peek-a-boo page for Zoey would be perfect! I noticed the outside edge of my mirror was fabric so I would be able to sew along the edges, hopefully hidden by the mirror edge, to keep it on the page. I was going to use flaps to offer a way to easily hide and show the mirror so Zoey could play peek-a-boo with herself without requiring our help.

Materials

• Plastic Mirror (from a baby play gym)
• Flannel that I had on hand from the Duplo Storage Bag and Playmat and the interior of my Peek-a-Boo Television Characters Quilt
• Seam ripper
• 108″ Unbleached Muslin Natural Fabric by the Yard – for the page itself
• Pellon Fusible Thermolam Plus White Fabric by the Yard – for the page itself
• And of course my sewing machine, thread, and a hand needle

The first step was to prepare the mirror by cleaning the fabric around the mirror with diaper wipes and then using a seam ripper to remove the strap on the back of the mirror that attached the mirror to the baby gym.

I then centered the mirror on the page and used thread to hand sew it to the page. I had debated using embroidery floss but decided to go with the thread as it was thinner and easier to pull through the fabric on the flower. Because the edge of the mirror extended a bit over the beginning of the flower petals, I was able to tuck my needle and thread under the edge of the mirror before sewing through the petals and thus kept my seams hidden.

My next step was to create the peek-a-boo covers. I chose to sew the top and the bottom of the flap together and used two colors of fabric: grey for the underside and pink for the top side. I wanted to cover up the mirror on all four quadrants so decided to go with four flaps. I measured the mirror, divided the height and width in two, cut the squares, sewed the grey and pink together by sewing it on three sides, flipping them right side out, and then closing up the fourth side.

I decided that the side I sewed closed on the outside will be where I sew the flap to the page. I aligned the flaps to cover up the mirror and have a single sewn side of the flap on each side of the mirrors so they’d open up in all four directions. Alternatively, you could make the open just on the sides or from the top and bottom. After pinning them in place I machine sewed them onto the page.

With the page finished all that was left to do was sew the page with it’s reverse side of the page, put right side out, close the page, and then add the grommets. You can read more about how I combined my quiet book pages if you’re interested or you can join them together your own way.

If I were to do this again I would…

• Originally I wanted to use a second set of flaps that stretched across to hide the entire set of pink flaps. Somehow I ended up making the flaps shorter than I wanted so I decided to leave them off. If you’re interested the plan was to add four grey rectangles and sew them to the page along all four sides. I was going to fold them together like the top of the box so there was a bit more to the peek-a-boo mirror than just opening and closing the flaps.
